Crinolines & bustles

The cage crinoline invented in 1856 was strong enough to support wide skirts without the need for burdensome petticoats. But by the end of 1860s large bell-shaped skirts reached their peak, and the volume began shifting towards the rear in shape of crinolettes and later bustles.
